Biography

Richard was first elected to the Coquitlam City Council in 2005. Richard is a life-long Coquitlam resident, and is proud to have raised a four kids with his wife in Coquitlam.

Richard speaks both English and French, and served his community as the MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardville from 2001 to 2005, prior to his election to Council.

Mayor Stewart has extensive experience as a community volunteer in a large number of social, service, environmental, business and community organizations, including the Coquitlam Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, Maillardville Lions Club, Société Maillardville Uni and Société Biculturelle de Maillardville, and more. He has also served a number of different provincial and national organizations in a number of different roles, including as President of the Canadian Home Builders Association of BC, the Chair of the National Housing Economic Research Council, a member of the BC Minister’s Advisory Council on Affordable Housing, and more.

Outside of local government, Richard is a writer and has operated his own government relations and communications business.
